How to develop a photobook in 2026


This workshop will guide you through the essential decisions and practical steps involved in turning a photographic project into a coherent, well presented publication. You will explore how to refine your topic, curate your images and choose a format that suits both your creative intentions and the realities of production. The session also explains how to approach publishers or printers, and what to consider if you choose to self publish. Participants will leave with a clearer sense of purpose, practical tools for planning and production, and the knowledge required to approach publishers or pursue self publication. What you will learn/do • define the purpose and vision of your book project; • understand book design, layout, materials, and printing processes; • explore production workflows and technical considerations; • learn about publishing contracts and funding opportunities; • compare working with a publisher vs. self-publishing; • receive individual feedback through a one-to-one consultation. Schedule • Sunday, May 3, 2026, 15:00 – 18:00 Module 1: How to Define the Project Clarifying concept, intention, narrative structure, and audience. Module 2: How to Materialise the Project Design, production, printing, publishing pathways, funding, and distribution. Module 3: One-to-One Consultation – 9 sessions (10 minutes/participant) Personalised feedback and guidance on your specific project. Workshop details This workshop is destined for anyone interested in bookmaking. The maximum number of participants is 15. About the lecturer Gilles Cargueray supports photographers and brands in their photography projects He adapts to each project, respecting each photographer’s and institution’s values, visions and artistic directions. The main photographers he is working with are Édouard Elias, Line Brusegan and brands Leica Camera France, Leica Camera AG, Fondation des Treilles, Initial LABO, Imprimerie Escourbiac, les Grands Ateliers de France. He is also supporting and advising young and newly reconverted photographers during portfolios reviews at Les Rencontres d’Arles, Visa pour l’Image – Perpignan, Circulation, Photodays. His expertise is to develop a full project linked to the phtographer’s vision, from the production, post production, edition and exhibitions.
