„#mili-eu: Ileana, bunica domnului B. Fotografie de familie țesută în milieu”

Artists: Ana-Cristina Irian and Cristian Bassa
December 2023 - February 2024

About the exhibition:

This project brings together both feminine and masculine perspectives by weaving archival photographs – taken by Ileana’s husband and grandson — into the delicate lace milieus/doilies, she created. This experimental approach aims to explore how fragile personal objects can serve as tools for communication, memory preservation, and the creation of visual narratives in interpersonal contexts.

The story began with a phone call in 2021, a conversation about Ileana’s bag of milieus. The collector spoke about these small, fragile objects and the desire to activate them in a way that would honour the grandmother who had crafted them.

About the artists:

Ana-Cristina Irian is a research-based artist, visual arts researcher, and curator, working with collections, photographic archives and multimedia materials. Her artistic practice, guided by the motto “No one left behind”, highlights objects of memory, integrating the photographic material in contemporary art pieces. Her works investigate the way in which personal and collective memory are shaped by images, material culture and spatial transformations, often through participatory and archive-restoring methods. She studied sociology in Trento and Regensburg, visual anthropology in Bucharest and Perugia and has a doctorate in visual arts from UNArte.

Cristian Bassa is a photographer, designer, editor and collector with a passion for photobooks. He initiated and coordinated four photographic projects with a social impact for charitable organisations, which materialised as personal exhibitions and published albums. He is the co-organiser of the Bucharest Photo Week festival and the author of two documentary photobooks, “Beautiful Sunrise” and “Forward March”. Between 2016 and 2024, he collaborated with Dorian Delureanu and visually documented traditional wells in Oltenia, which resulted in three books and two exhibitions, supported by the National Museum of the Peasant and Museum of Oltenia. The project received an award at the National Awards for Visual Arts in 2024.

Together, Cristina and Cristian develop artistic, documentary installations, focused on memory, vernacular heritage and shared histories, situated at the intersection of research and visual expression.
