HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

General image culture is essential to a photographer's development; it also becomes necessary for exercising the critical spirit and understanding the multitude of images that pass before our eyes daily. Cristina will go through the history of photography, from the first preliminary manifestations of photography to what is happening in photography today. You will truly understand why photography is writing with light.

The course will not only be theoretical; we will also have practice - sometimes we will develop old tools to capture images, other times we will visit a private archive collection and on a Saturday we will go around the city in search of photographs that make up the history of Bucharest and its people. Last but not least, we don't get stuck in what was but explain how what was can help us in today's artistic process. If you want to understand the image better, the history of photography is for you.

Time schedule:

Tuesday, October 3 from 18:00 to 21:00 - Photography before 1900 (shadow, mirroring, silhouette, camera obscura, camera lucida, cliche verre, first experiments, glass, metal and paper, negative/positive, dagaguerreotype etc. )

Wednesday 4th October 18:00 to 21:00 - Photography from 1900 to digital (glass to plastic and vernacular photography, types of cameras, how photography was used, Kodak)

Saturday October 7 from 11:00 to 18:00 - We build and shoot like in the beginning (experiments and apply the tools learned in personal practice)

Sunday, October 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - Practice visit to archive photo collection/ museum/ etc.)

Wednesday, October 11 from 18:30 to 20:30 - Early Digital (1950 - 2007; first digital photography, first digital cameras, press photo conversion, etc.)

Tuesday, October 17 from 18:00 to 20:30 - Main Photo Currents and Movements in Europe and the USA

Tuesday, October 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. - Macrohistory of Romanian photography (19th century up to and including photoclubism)

Saturday 28 October from 18:30 to 20:30 - Types of photographs and their reading/construction

Tuesday, October 31 from 18:30 to 20:30 - How you can use the history of photography in your everyday practice

About Cristina Irian:

Take photos but more than that, research and analyze photos; she is passionate about archival photography and anthropological photography, being constantly involved in interdisciplinary projects. He received his doctorate at UNARTE, Art History and Theory. He studied visual anthropology in Bucharest, SNSPA and Perugia, at Universita' degli Studi UniPg, but also comparative local development at Universita' degli Studi di Trento.

Together with Cristian Bassa and Dorin Delureanu, he founded the Omnia Photo association with the aim of promoting contemporary and historical photography and developing the public of photography. Cristina always has at least one old photo with her that she can talk about for hours with enthusiasm; she's the one who can give you tons of details about an unknown family just by looking at a picture taken at the turn of the last century. She successfully passes through multiple roles – from researcher, to artist or pedagogue.

· Total 26.5 study hours, of which 12.5 theory and 12.5 practice;

· Maximum 20 seats;

· It takes place at the Photography Resource Center (Strada Popa Tatu, no. 68, Bucharest);

· No photographic equipment is required;

· The module is part of the complete photography course;

· You can choose to follow the whole module or one or more lessons in the module.
