"The Open Image" Photography Course

This masterclass is less about photography in general and more about you as a photographer. It is an open-ended exploration that follows where imagination and curiosity lead, without predetermined limits.

You will explore how photography can be used to interpret the world around and within you. You will engage in discussions about photography, cinema, literature, relationships, the environment, life itself. You will take new pictures and find inspiration for ongoing projects, sharpening your perception and developing the art of visual improvisation.

The instructor will share experiences from nearly four decades of practice, providing personalized guidance on visual storytelling, discovering subjects, developing long-term projects, editing and workflow, sequencing photographs, organizing exhibitions, and creating photobooks. You will create new work, find direction for ongoing projects, and receive practical advice tailored to your level of experience.

What you will learn:

• How to enhance perception and practice visual improvisation at the moment of photographing, trusting your instinct and responding to what's in front of the lens

• Visual storytelling techniques drawn from cinema, literature, and other disciplines, and how to develop long-term projects that reflect your vision

• Practical approaches to editing and workflow, sequencing photographs, and understanding how images work together to create meaning

• Steps for organizing a solo exhibition and creating a photobook, from concept to execution

• Practical info – from specific concepts to bibliography, skills, know how etc.

Course details:

This course is online and taught in English. You need a laptop/ phone/ tablet with internet access, a previous body of work (ideally you want to undertake a project or have ongoing photo projects) and a willingness to read, watch, listen and experience.

About the lecturer:

Panos Kasimis is a freelance photographer with nearly four decades of experience. He works worldwide on personal artistic projects that evolve into books and exhibitions, as well as on assignments for magazines, institutions, and independents. His work often explores social behaviour through the physicality of human contact and humanity’s relationship with the urban and natural environment.
