Black & White Film Developing Workshop

On one hand, in the studio with Ionuț you will learn the basics of portrait photography and lighting, shooting either with a camera provided by us or with your own camera, using film supplied by us. On the other hand, you will learn how to develop your own film together with Matei, in his lab at °isopatrusute. By the end, you will have all your frames scanned and ready to use (in addition to your newly developed negatives).

What you will learn /do:

• basic rules of portrait composition and fun hands-on practice with fellow workshop participants;

• information on how to shoot on film and actually get good results (ISO, distance, etc.);

• a tour of the film development lab;

• you will carry out the entire development process yourself, from A to Z (including developer, fixer, etc.);

• you will see the scanning process;

• for developing, participants will be divided into smaller groups for different days.

Course schedule:

• Saturday, May 9, 2026, 11:00–17:00 – Studio portrait photography on film with Ionuț Staicu

• Tuesday, May 19, 2026, 18:00–21:00, at °isopatrusute – Developing film for half of the group, with Matei Dumitru

• Wednesday, May 20, 2026, 18:00–21:00, at °isopatrusute – Developing film for the other half of the group, with Matei Dumitru

Course details:

This is a module from the course “Fundamentals of Photography” and can be taken independently by those interested only in film photography and developing.

If you have a film camera, we will provide the film. If you don’t, that’s fine—we will provide a camera with film included (a disposable camera).

About the lecturers, briefly:

Ionuț Staicu is a photographer with over 20 years of professional experience, focused on commercial fashion and product photography, with award-winning advertising campaigns.

Matei Dumitru develops film at °isopatrusute, a laboratory dedicated to film photography. With a background in cinematography, Matei is concerned with creating a bridge between the creative and the practical, providing photographers with the technical means and support they need to implement their ideas and bring their projects to life.
